The ancestral home
of the Wolseley Family as far back as the 11th century, Wolseley
Park and Hall has witnessed many major historical events and changes
in our society. |
 |
It is thought the
name Wolseley derives from the Anglo-Saxon words "wolves" and "ley".
Ley meaning water meadows. Legend has it that the early Wolseleys
cleared the area of wolves. |
 |
Over the decades
the site had been home to a medieval manor house, you can still see
the foundations today, the last Wolseley Hall stood here until 1967
when it became unsafe and was demolished.
More recently the grounds were landscaped as part of the ambitious
Wolseley Garden Park, this was to be the first ornamental gardens
created by private enterprise specifically for opening to the
public. |
 |
Sadly this venture failed and the site was left to its own devices
for over a decade. |
 |
Since 2003 Wolseley has been in the ownership of
Staffordshire
Wildlife Trust, it is now home to a variety of wildlife and
habitats, as you wander look for all the different habitats
and see examples of some of the natural heritage of Staffordshire.
